Tool #10 - Underneath it All - Digital Citizenship

Three things that I want my students to understand about being a good digital citizens are the following:

1)  Follow the SBISD guide lines on the use of the internet.  Downloading illegal music, sending inappropriate  mails, accessing prohibited websites, and other unethical behavior will have disciplinary consequences.

2)   Refer to different sources in the internet when doing a search.  No everything that is written in a website is necessary true, sometimes the students will need to look for other digital and non-digital resources to verify the accuracy of the information that they are looking for.

3)  Students need to know how to protect their computer from viruses, spam email, and Trojan Horse Malwares.  The training on digital security will be very important to effectively work with the students using technology.

I will use the material in i-SAFE to educate students on how to be excellent digital citizens.  An example lesson is “Cyber Harassment:  Online Bullying and Stalking”; there are other interesting lessons.  Online videos on the subject will be used as instructional resources.  Parents can get information about digital citizenship from a set of links to several websites that I will include in the course syllabus.
